Overwatch 2 is officially bringing back Loot Boxes.
Blizzard Entertainment
Your eyes are not deceiving you. It’s official: Loot Boxes are returning to the world of Overwatch. As revealed during the Overwatch 2 Spotlight stream, the iconic reward from the original game is coming back. And you won’t have to wait long to open one either – Loot Boxes will return in Season 15, which starts next week.
You can earn Loot Boxes through weekly and event challenges. The free Battle Pass will include one Legendary Loot Box, and you’ll be able to earn two additional Legendary Loot Boxes in the Premium Battle Pass.
Overwatch 2 Loot Box Rarity
Every regular Loot Box will include at least one Rare item. Within five consecutive boxes, you’re guaranteed at least one Epic item. And within every 20 Loot Box opens, you’ll get a guaranteed Legendary item. That’s in addition to a guaranteed Legendary cosmetic in every Legendary Loot Box.
Just like in the original Overwatch, you’ll get four items per Loot Box. Cosmetic items tied to the current season – i.e. those in the Shop or Battle Pass – won’t appear in Loot Boxes, Blizzard confirmed to me and other reporters. Neither will cosmetics from the various crossovers with the likes of Cowboy Bebop and Le Sserafim.
Duplicates won’t be an issue either. Rather than giving you credits for a duplicate item that you already unlocked, the Loot Box will reroll and give you one you don’t already have and if, by chance, you’ve unlocked absolutely everything, opening a Loot Box will give you an I.O.U. of sorts.
You probably won’t be able to stockpile hundreds of Loot Boxes either. Sorry, hoarders! If you have any left over when a season ends, these will be opened for you automatically.
Loot Boxes went away as part of the transition to Overwatch 2 and the Battle Pass model in October 2022. At least to begin with, Loot Boxes will not be available to buy from the Overwatch 2 Shop for real-world currency.
Some jurisdictions have banned Loot Boxes. It remains to be seen how Blizzard will reinstate them in those areas, if at all.
We’ll find out more about how the returning Loot Boxes work when Blizzard drops the Season 15 launch blog post next week.
