Reinhardt Mythic Weapon in Overwatch 2
Blizzard Entertainment
Over the last several seasons of Overwatch 2, fans have been able to acquire a new type of cosmetic. Since Season 11, Blizzard has introduced one Mythic weapon per season. Players can unlock these by accruing a certain type of currency through the premium Battle Pass — these Mythic Shards can also be used to obtain Mythic skins.
I initially picked up every Mythic skin, since each was tied to a premium Battle Pass. But I stopped doing that when the Mythic weapons were introduced, because they’re so dang good.
They’re all beautifully designed, and the visual and audio effects that accompany them — especially when securing an elimination — are a treat for the eyes and ears.
I have to admit, when I first heard about a weapon inspection/flourish option coming to Overwatch, I didn’t think I’d care. Now it’s by far my favorite thing about the Mythic weapons.
Overwatch 2’s Weapon Flourishes Are Rad
The Soldier: 76 flourish is neat, but it’s the one I like least. I love Reinhardt flipping his hammer and Ashe waving around a rose before (usually) tossing it at a vanquished foe. But as a sometime Ana main (at least on the rare occasions I don’t play Mystery Heroes), I’ll never get tired of her Mythic weapon flourish of spinning her Sleep Dart gun around her finger. It’s just really fun to twirl around until it’s time to make someone go to sleep.
I think what makes the Mythic weapons more compelling than Mythic skins is that Overwatch 2 is a first-person game. For the most part, you don’t see much of the skins that your hero wears while you’re playing — unless the perspective switches to third-person for an emote or particular ability. And sure, the Mythic skins have some cool effects too, like custom voice lines and vocal augmentations.
But weapons are visible almost all the time. Given that weapons take up a huge chunk of screen real estate, equipping the which makes the Mythic weapons makes it feel like I’m getting more bang for my proverbial buck. (Disclosure: Blizzard sent me a few Mythic Shards to help me unlock a Mythic weapon faster.)
Going forward, it’s going to be a tough call as to whether I’ll unlock a Mythic weapon or skin each season. I don’t expect to buy extra Mythic Shards or a weapon bundle to unlock both. At a rate of around six per year each, it’ll take a long, long time until every hero has a Mythic weapon and skin. And who knows, I may eventually have them all in my collection.
The Mythic weapons are my favorite cosmetics right now. But that said, Team 4, can we please get more dance emotes already? Thanks!
